Search Engine Optimization

This begins a multi-part series of Tips related to Search Engine Optimization.

This week, The Definition of SEO:

Having a great web site is one thing, but if you want others to be able to find your web site, you'll want to include this goal in your planning when you are designing your web site. This is called 'Search Engine Optimization' (SEO), or 'Search Engine Marketing' (SEM).It's also called "Search Engine Positioning", or 'Search Engine Placement', among others.

What this means, in a nutshell, is where your web site ranks among all the web sites that show up when someone does a search, using a search engine (Google, Yahoo, Lycos, etc).

Let's take a step back, and understand what is meant by 'ranking within a search engine'. If you go to Google and search on, say, 'office supplies', Google will return a list of web sites which offer office supplies. At the top of the list, and to the right hand side of the results page, some of the web sites are advertised as 'sponsored links'. These are web sites which have paid Google to appear at the top of the list, when people search for 'office supplies'.

The other web sites which appear when a user searches on the keyword phrase 'office supplies', which are not sponsored links, are pages which have been optimized to rank well within Google. These pages do not pay Google any amount to rank well in Google.  Ranking well means showing up first, or within the first page, or two, or three, of a search result. Generally, most people won't go searching page after page on a search engine result. They tend to make their selections from the first few pages.

How a web site ranks within Google is based on a combination of the content within that web page, and (to a lesser extent) the page rank of that web page compared to the other web pages that have the same content.
