If you have a web site, chances are you've received emails promising to submit your web site to over a bazillion search engines for one low fee. Should you bite? In a word, no. In the search engine world, there really are only about a dozen major search engines. Of these, the granddaddy of them all is Google. Optimize your site to rank high in Google, and you'll do very well. Some of the search engines (like Yahoo and, soon, AOL) get their results from Google, so, once you are optimized in Google, you may find yourself in good ranking on other search engines, even without submitting to those search engines. Many of these major search engines prefer that you submit your web site by hand instead of using automated submission services. In fact, Altavista is set up such that you can't use an automated submission (on the URL submission page, there's a graphic of 'ransom note' type letters. You copy the letters into a textbox in order to submit your URL). Bottom line, stick to the major search engines, submit by hand, optimize your web site honestly (no dirty tricks!), and you'll do fine. Hope this helps! Feel free to email Lesley if you run into any problems.
