Lesley's Internet Tip For Getting Rid of Pop-up Windows:
Continuing with this month's theme of fighting unwanted intruders on
your PC (Antivirus Software
, Firewall Software
, Fighting Spam
),
this week's tip deals with getting rid of those annoying pop-up windows
that appear when you visit some web sites. I wonder how effective they
actually are as marketing tools, since many people simply close them
without looking at them. They're kind of like telemarketers; you hang up
on them the moment they call (well, at least I do...). Listed below are
some that I've found:
Google
Tool Bar now has a Pop Up Blocker feature.
PopNot
by High Density Software. It prevents pop-ups and pop-unders, while
allowing you to accept pop-ups on web sites with its
"Allow Site Pop Up" feature. It only works with Internet
Explorer, and on Windows systems. There's a free 15 day trial; after
that it costs $19.95.
Pop-Up Stopper
by Panicware, Inc. has 3 versions; Free, Pro ($19.95), and
Companion ($39.95). Each version offers increasingly additional
features. This
software is not yet supported for Macs, but works on both Internet
Explorer and Netscape. Interestingly, only the free version works on
Netscape.
Popup Ad Filter
by Meaya Software offers a free trial version. The fully
functional trial version lasts about 30 to 40 pop-ups. After that,
you'll be asked to purchase the version. You can extend your trial
period. The cost is $24.95. Works on Windows, for Internet Explorer 5
or later, but does not support Opera or Netscape.
PopupDummy!
is made by K.soft . This software can be set up to allow pop-ups on
certain 'safe' web sites, as well as temporarily turned off while in
use. There's no free trial version, PopupDummy!
costs $18.00.
Start Surfing
offers pop-up protection, as well as some other
interesting tools. Definitely check out the Features
page; it's pretty interesting and entertaining. Start Surfing
eliminates pop-ups, browser resizing, disables auto-midi
files, and disables onMouseOver events. It's free. It works on
Internet Explorer and Netscape, but is not yet available for
Macs. While this software doesn't allow you to accept 'safe
web sites', you can change your network proxy
settings to rectify
this.
PopKi Popup Closer v1.4
is offered free by Randy's Freeware. It is a
Windows application which allows you to decide when you want to allow
a new window or pop-up to occur.
Free Surfer mk II
is a free pop-up stopper by EMS-Project. It
runs on Windows, and is especially optimized for Windows XP. It's not
currently available for Linux or Macs. One caveat; there have been
problems reported with some of the Logitech wheel mouses.
StopZilla
is a pop-up stopper for Windows and Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and
higher only. The full version costs $29.95, however, there's a free 15
day trial offer. StopZilla
gives users the option to automatically add all blocked pop-ups to a
'blacklist'.
StopPops
keeps a running counter (which can be reset) of all the pop-ups that
it stops, and can optionally play a sound when a pop-up is detected
(Hmmmm.....sounds
like *that* could get annoying pretty quick!). The user can turn it
off or on, as well as disable it temporarily while it's running, if
there's a pop-up they wish to see. StopPops
costs $35 (although they are currently offering a 30 day discounted
price of $25). Works on Windows and Internet Explorer
only.
Exit Killer 3.0
offers a free 10 day trial version. The full version
costs $29.95. It has adjustable sensitivity levels, and can be set up
to run automatically. The good part? Exit Killer 3.0
runs on all versions of Internet Explorer 3.0 through
6.0, Netscape versions 4.08 and higher, and AOL 7.0. The bad part?
Seems it gets 50/50 mixed reviews of people who love it or hate
it.
Guard-IE
by GuardWall advertises a jammed packed tool which offers spyware
privacy reports, intercepts web based worms and viruses, and removes
your web history as well as stopping pop-ups. For Windows Internet
Explorer 5.01 and higher only. There's a 20 day free trial, and after
that, it costs $29.99.
Hope this helps! Feel free to email Lesley
if you run into any problems.
