Just as antivirus software is a must, you also need a firewall, especially if you connect to the internet via DSL, cable modem, or any other type of continuous connection. If you use a dial-up modem, you are less susceptible to an attack because you are assigned a different IP address every time you log on. Two of the more popular firewall software packages are McAffee and Norton . You can also download an excellent firewall software, Zone Alarm , for free.
How do you know if it's working? You can test your firewall using Gibson Research Corporation (scroll down and click on Leak Test). You can also check out how your firewall software rated against the others at Leak Test Firewall Scoreboard.
Also, the June 2002 issue of Consumer Reports has some interesting information about antivirus software and firewall software, as well as the ratings of some of the other products available.
